Lecture 1- The Basics of Ayurveda

Five essential elements of human body are the “Pancha Mahabhoota”: Vayu (Air), Jala (Water), Aakash (Space), Prithvi (Earth) and Teja (Fire).

These all five form the three basic humors of human body in varying combinations “The Tridoshas” – Vata dosha, Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha. Pancha Mahabhoota along with Tridosha, control the basic physiological functions of human body.

Human body is consisting of “Saptadhatus” (seven tissues) Rasa (tissue fluids), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle) Meda (fat and connective tissue), Asthi (bones), Majja (marrow) and Shukra (semen) and “Three Malas” of the body, viz. Purisha, Mutra and Sweda.

Also, there is concept of Agni in Ayurveda – this Agni is biological fire of the body and it is essential for all the metabolic function.
